Dance

Dance has been something I’ve grown up with and love to do. My aunt Patti, who I’ve always been close with, was very serious about dance. During High School, she decided that that’s what she was going to pursue. She went to Long Island school of the arts for half of the day during her sophomore year through senior year. She took classes at the New York state summer school of the arts, then went on to New York school of the arts for college. During that Alvin Ailey summer workshops. She then went on to teach dance at a studio when she moved to Florida. When I would spend time with her, I would put on costumes and her old ballet shoes, that were clearly too big for me, and dance around with her. She is definitely one of my role models and influenced me to start dancing.

I started dance classes when I was in first grade.  When I started my first tap/ballet class, I loved it from the start. My mom never had to drag me to dance. I was always happy to go.

As I got older, I realized that dance was definitely my favorite out of school activity, and to me it was more than just a pastime. I didn’t really enjoy sports that much, so I decided to commit most of my after school time to dance.

It has been a really positive influence on my life. When I have a bad day, I go to dance and immediately forget my problems. Its a good way for me to express myself and to see  myself progress over the years. I think it is important for everyone to have some way of expressing themselves. Whether it is a sport, instrument, or hobby, doing something you like often is important to staying happy. Dance plays that role for me and has been a big influence on my life. Without it, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.
